Sunday Market Plus - Housewives and Senior Citizens Get a Helping Hand at Tampines Changkat Sunday Market (Updated 30 Dec 2008)

Tampines Changkat Womenfs Executive Committee, in partnership with the Tampines Street 11 Hawkers and Merchants Association, have initiated a new scheme called Sunday Market Plus, to help housewives and lower-income families cope with the economic downturn. The programme was officially launched at the Tampines Changkat Sunday Market on 14 December 2008. The launch also coincided with the first Christmas fair held at the market, which has recently been voted as the best hawker centre in Singapore.

The programme, called Sunday Market Plus, involves collecting good quality donated items from various groups, and distributing them to housewives to sell at the regular Sunday Market. They are provided stalls and will get to keep the proceeds from their sales.

Many of the women in the programme come from the Meet-the-People sessions with MP Irene Ng. Besides helping them with financial assistance, Ms Ng also offers them this new programme to help them earn some income and to equip them with confidence, self-reliance and entrepreneurial skills.

gSome of the women tell me that they want to sell products at our flea market, but donft know what to sell. They do not have the connections. So we started collecting good quality goods for them to sell. They keep the profit and use it to pay some of their household bills,h said Ms Ng.

The first group to respond to Ms Ngfs request for donated items was the British High Commission. It donated many quality items, which include toys and books. His Excellency Paul Madden, the British High Commissioner, will be our Special Guest at the launch of the programme.

The programme has been piloted since August 2008 and currently have about twelve women on the scheme. The pilot phase has shown the viability and usefulness of such a scheme. Many of the items donated by the British High Commission have already been sold. And Tampines Changkat Womenfs Executive Committee is constantly on the lookout for high quality donated items.

If you are keen to help donate items to the programme or participate in the programme, you can contact Tampines Changkat Community Club.
