Ceramics as in "Pottery-making"
was one of the several crafts - making activities organised
by the Tampines Changkat Community Centre in 1989. Classes
were conducted in one of the activity rooms on the 3rd
floor, equipped only with basic instruments, a couple
of electric potter's wheel and a kiln .
Initially it was known as the pottery club catering
to the public interest in the traditional craft of pottery.
Members of the Tampines Changkat Pottery Club regularly
organised exhibitions for the Tampines Changkat CC's
annual Open House and other official functions. We had
pottery exhibitions and planned hands-on workshops and
exhibition.
Interest in the courses grew and participants from all
walks of life became more sophisticated in their needs.
Advance courses were organised and reviewed regularly
to embrace the practice and skill of participants.
Tampines Changkat Ceramics Art Club was formally created
to cater to the needs of the community. The club then
moved to a larger premise at the ground floor. This
ceramics studio has been upgraded with air-conditioning
and fully equipped with 8 electric porter's wheels,
and 2 kilns, one being a gas kiln. The studio is now
the most well equipped and conducive for ceramics work.
The club also organise interactive activities to encourage
public participation and interest. The members collaborated
with three other Community Centres to organize "Clay
Link" art exhibition in 1999 and the Clay Link
2 exhibition in 2002.
Tampines Changkat Ceramics Art Club hopes to reinvent
itself for the next millennium to help individuals and
the Tampines Changkat Community Club become more active
and stay relevant to the members and the public. New
ceramics courses such as ceramics sculpture glaze preparation
and sharing sessions among members will be introduced
to further enlarge the scope of the club. The possibility
for future expansion of identity and community involvement
will be looked into.
