TAMPINES CHANGKAT SILVER CONNECT EAST COAST OUTING FOR WHEELCHAIR BOUND ELDERLY (Updated 13 July 2010)
An outing, specially organised for wheel-chair bound elderly, was held on Saturday 10 July 2010 at 8.30am at the East Coast Park. The outing was the first time that Tampines Changkat Grassroots Organisations is organising for wheel-chair bound elderly. Youth volunteers were roped in to serve as befrienders and accompany the wheelchair bound elderly for this outing.
Ms Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC and Adviser to Tampines Grassroots Organisations said, “During one of my house-to-house visits, I notice there is an increasing number of wheelchair-bound elderly cooped in their flats. Such social isolation may lead to depression and other problems. As such, I have asked my grassroots leaders to organize regular outings for the wheelchair-bound elderly. I am happy to note that our youth volunteers from Tampines Changkat Youth Executive Committee have stepped forward to take the lead for this meaningful project. I am sure our elderly will enjoy the youths’ company during the outing.”
One such elderly is Mr Hiew Far Lim, aged 72. Mr Hiew used to enjoy his daily exercise session at St Luke Wellness Centre and weekly qiqong session. Unfortunately, he was infected by virus at the beginning of this year which affected his ears and caused him to have imbalance and was prone to fall. This illness has changed his lifestyle and affected his mobility. He has to be wheelchair bound now and misses his daily exercise and walk around the neighbourhood. Given her husband's condition, his wife who is taking care of him, has been confined to home most of the time. When Mrs Hiew learnt about this outing, she readily agreed to participate as both she and her husband have not been out of their house other than for his medical check-ups.
