Tampines Changkat Silver Connect Programme

The Tampines Changkat Silver Connect Programme, the brainchild of Ms Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC was started in 2005 to befriend and support the lonely and vulnerable elderly living in the community, especially the lower-income, and who lack a strong family network. This programme aims to draw out this group of elderly from their shells and “connect” them to each other as well with grassroots organizations and voluntary welfare organizations.

TAMPINES TOWN HUB UPDATE (Updated 31 Jan 2012)

Tampines Town Hub, the centerpiece of the Tampines five-year master plan from 2011 to 2015, will be Singapore’s first integrated lifestyle destination for the 21st century. Offering a variety of facilities and services that will be uniquely integrated for Tampines residents, the Hub will be a place to bring “Tampines Together” despite different needs and interests, like the kampong centre of olden days.

While the project is still in its designing stage, People’s Association has been working hard to engage as many Tampines residents as possible and gathering feedback about what they would like to have in Tampines Town Hub, as they want to build a Hub that truly reflects the wishes of the Tampines residents.

Engagement with residents were done through several platforms such as RC Block Parties, Roadshows, Newsletter and Surveys. Starting from Feb 2012, engagement will include phone surveys and focus group discussions.

As of 10 January 2012, the Tampines Town Hub team has gathered feedback from 1,434 Tampines residents. These are the preliminary findings we have received thus far: 82% are aware of the Town Hub project; more than a third of you would like to have facilities that cater to and encourage an active lifestyle; the majority of you see Tampines Town Hub as a place to relax, and hang out with friends and family; and Most of you are interested to find out how Tampines Town Hub can serve the community.

If you want to learn more about Tampines Town Hub and how you can contribute feedback, please visit http://mytampines.sg/townhub. You can find the schedule of events we are organizing or participating in and also fill up the Feedback Form there. Alternatively, engage with us directly by “liking” our Facebook Page and posting your comments and suggestions on our wall. We would love to hear from you!

TAMPINES CHANGKAT CELEBRATES JOYOUS PONGAL (Updated 19 Jan 2012)

15 Jan 2012 was a joyous day for the residents of Tampines  Changkat. Not only the indians but also the non-indian gathered at   Tampines St 11, open space  at Blk 138. Tampines Changkat residents celebrated the Tamil harvest festival Pongal featuring a live decorative cow and her calf for the first time this year.  Pongal is celebrated with great grandeur in  Singapore even though this festival  is a mainly celebrated by farmers to give thanks to the gods for their harvest.

“As a multi-religious community, we celebrate the important festivals of each community in our efforts to forge a more united society. I asked our Indian community leaders to make a special effort to bring in the live decorated cows to our Pongal celebrations this year, so that we can mark the occasion in a grander style and to be truer to its symbolic rituals. Through such efforts, I hope that more of our non-Indian residents will join the celebrations and learn more about about Pongal and its significance.” Said Ms Irene Ng, Grassroots Adviser for Tampines GROs and MP for Tampines GRC.

Previously, Pongal was celebrated in the closed confines of our Community Club with mainly Hindu residents. Because of Ms Ng’s intervention, this is the first time we are bringing it into an open space near the HDB shops, so that more can know more about this Hindu festival and join in the celebrations.

Highlights of the Pongal celebration include pongal rice-cooking competition, fancy dress , mono- acting competition, children colouring competition, and rangoli competition.
